Breast enlargement

Breast enlargement surgery (Augmentation mammaplasty)may be indicated in women who are not happy with the size or shape of their breasts. Breast enlargement is usually achieved by placing an artificial implant under the skin or muscle of the chest. Breast implants are usually made from silicone and are designed to make your breasts larger, firmer and fuller. Breast enlargement procedure is performed under general anesthesia and requires an overnight hospital stay. You will have a consultation with a surgeon prior to surgery to discuss the options available to you and to ensure that surgery is right for you.

In the operation the breast surgeon will make a cut in your skin (usually under the breast) to create a pocket under the skin or muscle of the chest. The breast implant is then inserted into this pocket and the wound closed with stitches.

Pain and bruising is common after breast enlargement surgery, and usually lasts a few days. After surgery an elastic bandage or surgical bra is worn over gauze dressings. Any discomfort should be limited and is easily controlled by medication. A soft support bra will be worn for the first three to four weeks. Activities will be limited during the first week. Any strenuous or repetitive activities will be limited for up to four weeks. After surgery the breasts are firmer and have a well contoured shape.
